One of the most well-preserved Minoan tombs in Crete

Algiers …Abdelaziz KASSAMA
The structure belongs to the second Late Minoan period and came to light by chance, during some excavations in the early last century.

A corridor (“dromos”), 25m long and 1.6m wide, leads to the chamber. The walls are coated with coarse stones, while a slim layer of reddish mortar covered its floor. There is a large lintel over the entrance to the chamber and a relieving triangle, open to the chamber and covered with a slab on the front. The stone threshold bears two sockets for the reception of pivots of a wooden gate. The chamber was finally blocked with a stone walling.
In 1943-44, the bombing during the Battle of Crete caused significant roof collapse and the backfill of the chamber of this vaulted tomb. It was partially restored in the 1970’s
