American biologist, philanthropist and activist Katharine McCormick was born Katharine Moore Dexter in Dexter on August 27, 1875 Michigan. After moving to Boston in 1890, she graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1904, earning a bachelor’s degree in biology. That same year, she married Stanley Robert McCormick, the youngest son of Cyrus McCormick and heir to the international Reapers fortune.
She became vice president and treasurer of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and financed the association’s publication the “Woman’s Journal” and after her husband’s death, as heiress to a substantial portion of the fortune Mc family funded most of the research needed to develop the first contraceptive pill.
